Best Newari Restaurant at Patan

Lisawaa Newari Kitchen is a gem in the heart of the city, Patan, offering an authentic experience of Newari culture and cuisine. The restaurant’s ambiance beautifully captures the essence of traditional Nepali homes, with its wooden decor and brick-like structures reminiscent of old Newari architecture. Stepping into Lisawaa feels like stepping back in time, surrounded by the rich heritage and warmth of Newari culture. The food, prepared with care and love, brings a homely touch to every dish, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to savor authentic Newari flavors.

Aalu Tama

I began my Newari food journey with Aalu Tama, a beloved soup in the Newari community. Made from fermented bamboo shoots, potatoes, and black-eyed peas, this dish is a favorite among many Nepali people. The soup was a perfect balance of sour and spicy, warm, and was incredibly comforting. It’s a delightful vegetarian dish that prepares your palate for the rest of the meal.

Buff Sekuwa

Next, I tried the Buff Sekuwa, one of Nepal’s most popular dishes. The buffalo meat was marinated and cooked to perfection which was not too chewy and not too soft. Adding a squeeze of lemon and some raw onions enhanced its taste, making each bite a delightful experience.

Mushroom Choila

As a vegetarian option, the Mushroom Choila was a pleasant surprise. I never imagined mushrooms could taste so amazing. The dish was spicy, with a perfect blend of tomatoes and a hint of sourness. The tender texture of the mushrooms absorbed the bold flavors of the spices, making it a delightful dish for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone who loves mushrooms.

Buff Choila

The Buff Choila at Lisawaa was among the best I’ve ever had. The meat was perfectly cooked, not chewy at all, and the spices were blended just right. It was spicy with the flavors of ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and a roasted aroma from the meat, creating a deliciously balanced dish.

Chicken Sadeko

Chicken Sadheko, a weekend special at Lisawaa, lived up to its name. The dish had the perfect amount of spices, mixed with raw onions and tomatoes. It was a bit sour, spicy, and tangy, making it very delightful.

Fokso Fry

Fokso Fry is a delicacy in Newar cuisine, consisting of goat’s lungs filled with a spicy batter, then boiled, sliced, and fried. The Fokso Fry at Lisawaa was simple and tasty, without any overpowering flavors. I enjoyed it the most with the spicy achaar (pickle) served alongside.

Aalu Sadeko

Aalu Sadeko is another vegetarian delight that combines tender potato chunks with a rich blend of spices, creating a perfect balance of taste and texture. The addition of fresh herbs and a touch of tanginess upgraded the dish, making each bite a burst of flavor. Aalu Sadeko at Lisawaa is not only a satisfying side dish but also a must-try for potato lovers looking for a spicy and savory treat.

Buff Sukuti

Buff Sukuti is dried buffalo meat, high in protein and full of flavor. At Lisawaa, the sukuti was soft and well-textured. I enjoyed it with green chilies and raw onions. The spices in the sukuti were perfectly balanced, enhancing the natural flavor of the meat.

Chyang

Chyang, a traditional alcoholic beverage enjoyed by many communities in Nepal, was the perfect drink to accompany my meal. The Chyang at Lisawaa was the best I’ve ever had, it was sweet with a hint of sourness. It complemented the spicy dishes beautifully, adding a refreshing touch to the meal.

I enjoyed all these dishes with chiura (beaten rice) and Chyang, which added an authentic touch to the overall dining experience.

Lisawaa Newari Kitchen offers more than just a meal, it provides a journey into the heart of Newari culture. The carefully prepared dishes, warm ambiance, and traditional decor make it a standout destination for anyone looking to experience the true flavors of Newari cuisine. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, Lisawaa is a place where you can enjoy the rich culinary heritage of Nepal in a beautiful and welcoming setting.
