How did you get started in the field of fashion design, and what inspired you to pursue this career?
Fashion design wasn’t my initial focus, but as I matured, my fascination with art and style grew. Exploring new trends and experimenting with outfits captivated me. Fashion became a channel to fulfill my creative desires, leading me to shift from a science path after high school. My unyielding passion for fashion fuels me; I thrive on turning imaginative concepts into tangible designs that redefine the world of style.
Can you tell us about your journey as a fashion designer in Nepal? What were some of the challenges you faced along the way?
With just a year’s journey in the fashion realm as a certified designer, my path has only just begun, promising more ahead. During my academic years, my college provided unwavering support and invaluable opportunities that laid the foundation for my venture. Crafting national attire for Ms. Prathistha Saakha (Miss Asia Pacific International) marked my Nepali industry debut, igniting a journey of continuous growth. From there, opportunities flowed, propelling my presence in the industry. My fashion journey has been remarkable, although punctuated by last-minute fittings, backstage chaos, late-night toil, and moments of restlessness. Amidst the challenges, gratitude for these experiences abounds.
What role do you believe Nepali fashion plays in promoting the country’s culture and heritage globally?
Nepal boasts a wealth of art and culture, though its global recognition remains limited. Fashion holds the potential to offer a global platform, showcasing our rich cultural heritage. Having showcased Nepali national attire at Miss Asia Pacific International in the Philippines, I strongly believe that fashion plays a pivotal role in projecting our diverse culture and heritage onto the global stage. It serves as a powerful tool to unite and promote our identity worldwide.
How is Nepal’s fashion industry as a whole?
As a newcomer to the fashion industry, I’m immersed in a world of discovery and adaptation. I’ve found the industry to be remarkably welcoming. Nepal’s fashion sector is currently in an exploratory phase, with designers extensively collaborating with celebrities, tiktok stars, actors, YouTubers, and more. This trend is contributing to a thriving Nepali fashion scene that’s gaining global recognition, filling us with pride for our culture and fashion on the international stage.
People have lots of misunderstandings about the fashion industry being negative and spreading bad influence on people. What are your thoughts on this?
I strongly disagree with the notion that the fashion industry is inherently negative and detrimental. Quite the opposite, it’s a catalyst for innovation, birthing fresh ideas and designs while providing a creative outlet. Fashion injects vitality into society by introducing novel styles. While criticism persists, it’s crucial to recognize that fashion isn’t inherently negative. Rather, it’s a source of empowerment, enabling individuals to showcase their uniqueness. It’s a medium of self-expression and strength, debunking misconceptions and revealing its positive impact on both individuals and society at large.
Can you share a memorable experience or achievement in your fashion design career that has had a significant impact on you?
I’d like to recount an unforgettable incident that left a lasting impact. Working with the prominent and successful Nepali actress, Ms. Aanchal Sharma, was a whirlwind experience. With her tight schedule, she signed the contract at 4 p.m. on the eve of the event. Overnight, we meticulously crafted her dress, and to our relief, the fitting was impeccable. The successful showcase reaffirmed that my skills transcend time constraints. This episode underscored that my abilities can triumph over time limitations, leaving an indelible mark on my career as a fashion designer.
How do you see the future of Nepali fashion evolving, and what are your aspirations for the industry?
The fashion scene in Nepal isn’t just for celebrities; everyday individuals are embracing style with zeal. People now exhibit remarkable fashion sense, incorporating designer wear into their daily routines. I firmly believe that dressing well breeds confidence. As the future unfolds, my aspirations for the Nepali fashion realm are to design clothing that offers both comfort and self-assurance.
