Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh has once again made her mark on the international stage, setting a new national record in the 20th edition of the World Aquatics Championship 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan. Gaurika, who previously clinched a gold medal in the South Asian Games (SAG), has now achieved an impressive individual performance in the 50-meter backstroke category.
The Chairperson of the Nepal Swimming Association, Ashok Bajracharya, proudly announced Gaurika’s achievement, revealing that she completed the 50-meter backstroke in just 31.44 seconds. This new record surpassed her own previous record of 31.87 seconds, showcasing her continuous growth and determination in the sport. It is worth noting that Gaurika’s previous record was set during the 12th SAG championship held in India back in 2016.
In addition to Gaurika’s outstanding performance, another Nepali swimmer, Alexander Shah, also made a significant achievement during the championship’s Olympic Qualifier tournament. Alexander set a new national record in the 100-meter freestyle category, completing the swim in an impressive 52.94 seconds. This slight improvement surpassed his previous record of 52.96 seconds, which he had achieved during the recently-held 11th NSA Cup Championship.
Team manager Naresh Baidya provided further updates on the Nepali swimmers’ performance, stating that Dubana Lama and Alexander still have events to participate in. Dubana Lama is set to compete in the 100-meter freestyle category, while Alexander will also participate in the 40-meter freestyle event.
The achievements of Gaurika Singh and Alexander Shah are a testament to the dedication and hard work put forth by Nepali swimmers in the international arena. These new national records showcase their continuous efforts to push boundaries and elevate their performances to new heights.
As the 20th edition of the World Aquatics Championship 2023 continues in Fukuoka, Japan, all eyes are on the Nepali swimmers as they strive for even greater achievements. The nation stands proudly behind Gaurika, Alexander, and the entire Nepali swimming team, hoping for more records to be broken and success to be achieved. Their outstanding performances serve as an inspiration for aspiring swimmers in Nepal and a source of national pride, solidifying their place in the world of aquatic sports.
