Vajra Market Brings a Slow, Outdoor Farmers’ Market to Kathmandu
A new outdoor farmers’ market, Vajra Market, has began from Saturday, March 14, 2026, in the lush garden of the historic Vajra Hotel in the Swoyambhu area of Kathmandu. Designed as a slow and community-focused market, the initiative aims to create a relaxed weekend gathering space centered around food, culture, and local creativity.
The market is organized by Francois Driard and his renowned brand Himalayan French Cheese. It is presented in partnership with Le Sherpa Concept Group and Vajra Hotel, building on their past collaborations that helped establish a vibrant community around the Le Sherpa Farmers’ Market.

Over the past two decades, Driard has played an important role in introducing the European-style farmers’ market concept to Kathmandu. Similar markets have previously been held at venues such as 1905 Restaurant & Bar, Yellow House, Le Sherpa Restaurant, Utpala Cafe, and Labim Mall.
Having admired the peaceful garden of Vajra Hotel since first visiting the space about 15 years ago, Driard envisioned a market that reflects an earlier Kathmandu, one that moved at a slower pace, surrounded by greenery and closely connected to the Valley’s cultural heritage.

Vajra Market’s main focus is on the organic products and a strong focus on environment, making it plastic-free and pet-friendly market. Visitors can start their morning with fresh breakfast and coffee, while around ten restaurants and cooks will prepare food on-site between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The market highlights Kathmandu’s diverse culinary scene with freshly prepared dishes ranging from Newari, Indian, Pakistani, Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, and Japanese to Italian, Mexican, and French cuisine. Guests will be able to enjoy the food in the garden or take it away. Draught beer and wines will also be available.

Adding to the lively atmosphere, students and performers from the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory presents live jazz throughout the morning, creating a relaxed and festive setting.
There is also an Artists’ Corner, where galleries and independent artists showcase their work and even create art live in the garden.

More than just a marketplace, Vajra Market aims to become a weekly gathering place for food lovers, artists, musicians, and the wider community, offering visitors a chance to slow down and experience a different rhythm of Kathmandu life.
