Samriddhi Rai: Bold, Versatile & Unapologetically Herself

Samriddhi Rai has established herself as one of the boldest and most versatile voices in Nepal’s entertainment industry. From her early presence in media and travel vlogging to her impactful rise as a singer-songwriter, her journey has been defined by passion, persistence, and unapologetic authenticity.

In this exclusive with The Buzz Nepal, Samriddhi reflects on her artistic fire, the challenges of being a woman in Nepal’s music scene, and why she proudly identifies herself—above all—as a musician.

“I was a quiet, observant child,” Samriddhi shares. “I wasn’t introverted, but I watched the world closely and often disagreed with what I saw. I became a quiet rebel—standing up for myself and questioning norms that didn’t sit right with me.”
That spark evolved into confidence, self-respect, and strong boundaries. “Today, I speak up not just for myself, but to inspire others—especially women—to do the same.”

For women in Nepal’s music industry, the journey is rarely smooth. Singer-songwriting is still new here, especially for women,” Samriddhi explains. “While the music community has been welcoming, the larger audience tends to take male artists more seriously. That’s been the challenge—proving our worth.”
Yet, she turns challenges into strengths: “It has made us more focused, fearless, and consistent.”

Her popular single Ma Chahi Nepali struck a chord nationwide. “It came from my own lived experience,” she says. “I often felt subtle caste-based indifference, and the phrase Ma Chahi Nepali was a reminder that beyond our diverse castes and ethnicities, we are all Nepali.”
Though not political in intent, the song carried a strong message of unity. “I still believe in that unity, but today I also feel strongly that we must first identify as human beings.”

Samriddhi doesn’t see music as something to engineer. “Artists are vessels—we’re channels for something greater. While I can take credit for my words, the melodies, emotions, and even the catchy parts are God-sent.”

Did you know?
Stranded once in a hotel in China where no one spoke English, Samriddhi wrote Prayas to comfort herself during a frightening moment. Ironically, her first love song—initially criticized—went on to become one of her most requested tracks worldwide.

Authenticity is at the heart of her artistry. “I’ve learned to walk away from spaces where I can’t be myself. It wasn’t always easy, but now I’ve built a life where I can stand my ground and stay rooted in who I truly am. That’s a freedom I cherish.”

Listening to old songs feels like meeting different versions of herself. “Sometimes I’m critical, spotting things I’d do differently. Other times, I reconnect with the younger me—full of hope and wonder. Each time, I learn something new.”

If her life were a soundtrack, the opening track would be Biswas, her debut single. Centered on self-belief and chasing dreams, the song perfectly embodies the energy and determination she lives by, making it the ideal anthem to introduce her journey.

Away from the stage, Samriddhi embraces simple joys. “I spend time with my two beautiful dogs—they’re my soulmates. We take long walks, and I enjoy home, family, comfort—and a good cup of coffee (or two) with a book.”

While she keeps her biggest dream close to her heart, Samriddhi reveals an exciting project: a duet with Neetesh Jung Kunwar, one of Nepal’s most beloved artists. Have you listened to their new song yet? It’s already out: Mann Ki Rani
