Abhaya & The Steam Engines Are Back with Laijau Malai 2, And It’s Everything Fans Were Waiting For
Abhaya & The Steam Engines have done it again. Three years after one of the most beloved songs in recent Nepali music history, they are back with another folk-rock banger.
When Laijau Malai dropped in January 2022, nobody quite expected what happened next. The folk-rock song, written and composed byAbhaya Subbaherself, went viral almost instantly, crossing 1 million views on YouTube within weeks and eventually surpassing 2.5 million, becoming one of the most streamed and shared Nepali songs of that year. It found its way into wedding receptions, road trip playlists, TikTok reels, and Instagram stories across Nepal and the diaspora. For a band that had been making music for over two decades, it was a moment of undeniable cultural breakthrough.

Now, Abhaya & The Steam Engines have released Laijau Malai 2 (Anga Mim Metne), and the sequel carries with it all the warmth, depth, and emotional sincerity that made the original so special.
What makes this song particularly unique is thestorybehind it. Abhaya has shared that the inspiration for Laijau Malai 2 came from the Sherma couple, whom she describes as some of the most authentic people she has met in a long time. The music video is based on their real love story, giving the song a grounded, personal quality that is rare in music today. It is not a manufactured narrative built around aesthetics. It is a genuine tribute to real love, told through the lens of one of Nepal’s most gifted songwriters.

The subtitle Anga Mim Metne, drawn from Limbu, adds another layer of cultural richness to the song, continuing Abhaya’s tradition of weaving indigenous languages and folk traditions into hermusic. The original Laijau Malai had featured verses in Limbu khyali by Dilli Phombo, and it was one of the elements that gave the song its distinctive identity. With Laijau Malai 2, Abhaya once again shows thatNepali musicis at its best when it draws from the full depth of the country’s cultural heritage.
Abhaya & The Steam Engines have been a cornerstone of Nepal’s live music scene for over 24 years, and yet Abhaya Subba continues to evolve, surprise, andconnectwith audiences in ways that most artists never manage across a career of that length. Laijau Malai put the band firmly back in the public spotlight at a time when it was needed most. Laijau Malai 2 suggests that the story is far from over.

The song is out now on YouTube. Go listen to it. Then listen to it again.
