Anuradha Koirala, affectionately known as Dijju (elder sister) in Nepal, is indeed a remarkable figure. She was born on April 14, 1949, to Colonel Pratap Singh Gurung and Laxmi Gurung, had a transformative journey driven by her passion for service and empowerment. Her education at St. Joseph Convent in Kalimpong, India, nurtured her with a strong sense of devotion to social work, inspired by the Mother and Sisters of the school. Witnessing Mother Teresa’s compassionate endeavors during her time in Calcutta left an indelible mark on her, inspiring her to dedicate herself to serving others.

Despite  her father’s dream to see her as a lawyer, and her own ambition to become an air hostess, Anuradha Koirala’s desire to serve took precedence. As a survivor of oppression herself, she felt the urge to empower women, driving them not to beg but to realize their capabilities and take action.

Balancing the responsibilities of being a single mother and a teacher, Anuradha Koirala embarked on her journey of helping women in need. In 1993, she founded Maiti Nepal with just two rooms, aiming to provide refuge for women facing abuse and trafficking. Over the years, Maiti Nepal expanded significantly under her dynamic leadership. Today, it has numerous facilities including Prevention Homes, Transit Homes, Women Rehabilitation Homes, a Child Protection Home, Hospice Centers, and a Formal School, providing vital services to over a thousand children daily.

 Her dedication and tireless efforts through Maiti Nepal have made a significant impact in the fight against sex trafficking and the protection of women’s rights. It’s truly inspiring to see how she has transformed Maiti Nepal from a small initiative into a powerful force for change, not only within Nepal but also on the international stage.

Her numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious CNN Hero Award in 2010, underscore the importance and impact of her work. Koirala’s leadership and compassion have undoubtedly saved countless lives and provided hope and opportunities for many vulnerable women and girls.

Anuradha Koirala’s work is an inspiration not only for the people of Nepal but for individuals worldwide. Her dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating women and girls who have been victims of trafficking is truly commendable. Through her leadership and the efforts of Maiti Nepal, she has provided a beacon of hope for those who have been subjected to such atrocities.
