Int’l media charmed by “China tour” amid cool summer in Hainan
July 4, 2025
This summer, Hainan – the tropical gem of China – welcomed a delegation of international journalists and photographers from the United States, Japan, South Korea, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and more. The media tour, organized by the Hainan Department of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television, and Sports, showcased the island’s rich blend of modern development, ecological beauty, and vibrant cultural heritage.
For many on the tour, it was their first visit to Hainan, and they were quickly immersed in the dynamic offerings of China’s largest Free Trade Port. At the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, the delegation explored world-class medical institutions, experiencing firsthand how Hainan blends Eastern and Western wellness practices. As the country’s only special medical zone, Lecheng collaborates with over 180 institutions across 20 countries, attracting more than 180,000 health-focused visitors in just the first five months of 2025.
The tour continued through Hainan’s lush rainforests and cultural landmarks, including Haikou’s Qilou Old Street and Baoting’s Binglanggu Li and Miao Cultural Heritage Park. There, the group experienced UNESCO-recognized Li and Miao traditions, including ancient spinning, dyeing, weaving, and embroidery techniques, and viewed local treasures like Hainan agarwood, Li pottery, and traditional bamboo pole dancing. Many visitors expressed admiration for the island’s enduring craftsmanship and therapeutic practices. One journalist, relieved of back pain after a traditional Li massage, jokingly remarked, “ I should have come to Hainan earlier.”

Beyond its beaches, Hainan surprised guests with extraordinary summer experiences: skydiving over tropical coasts at Skydive Tarhe, serene forest bathing on Shenyu Island, and indulgence at the Atlantis Sanya’s underwater suites and theme park. Other highlights included yachting excursions, Li-style banquets, and shopping sprees at the International Duty-Free Shopping Complex.
Zhang Hao, Deputy Director of the Sanya Tourism Board, shared that Sanya is evolving into a hub for low-altitude tourism and luxury yachting, with more than 120,000 yacht departures and over 10,000 skydivers recorded last year. In 2024, international cruise throughput reached 59,200 passengers, solidifying Sanya’s status as one of China’s top leisure destinations.
With visa-free access for citizens of 85 countries, Hainan continues to rise as a preferred international getaway. In 2024, inbound tourism surpassed one million visitors—a five-year record. The province now offers 10 tourism categories, including marine adventures, healthcare tourism, and upscale retail experiences.
As the international media discovered, Hainan is more than a sun-soaked destination—it is a gateway to healing, heritage, and high-end experiences.
