Mean Girls Wear Pink on Wednesdays

“On Wednesdays, we wear pink”. It is an iconic line from 2000s Rom-com ‘Mean Girls’ directed by Mark Waters. The line is said by one of the plastics as our main character, Cady Heron, gets invited to sit with them at lunch. I remember watching the movie and religiously following this rule. Dare I say, I still wear pink on Wednesdays.

Cady Heron played by Lindsay Lohan has been homeschooled all her life. She is a new student at North Shore High school. Her first day at school is chaotic. Everything seems bizarre where she has to deal with new faces and make herself fit in. But all she sees is rude looks and carefree students who remind her of the wilderness of African forests and animals. Cady’s struggle to fit in and feeling uneasy and lonely on the first day was somewhat relatable to all of us.

Cady has her first lunch in the restroom just because she didn’t have any friends to be with. Slowly, she connects with outcasts of the school-Janice and Damian. From them, she gets to know about a group of three girls which they call “the plastics.” They are beautiful, popular, and rich. The plastics have a leader-Regina George. She is the meanest girl in school.

Cady is this extremely intelligent and effortlessly beautiful girl. She gets invited by the plastics  to sit with them at lunch. At first, her friends Janice and Damian encourage her to join them so that they can know their secrets which later becomes the reason for falling out of their friendship. Things start to get complicated then, where Cady and Regina try to sabotage each other. Their catfight affects the whole school and every other girl and their secrets are exposed through a diary they keep namely “The Burn Book”.

I love how the movie portrays the difficulty of making friends in high school or in general. The movie also gives a very subtle message on how our company has a major effect in our life. Cady, who in the beginning was a calm girl turned into a mean and self-centered girl. The movie also tries to show the complexity of emotions teenagers go through when it comes to experiencing and understanding self-image, love, and friendship. In a way, this movie also focuses on bullying, popularity, loyalty and the outcomes of betrayal.

It is a great watch if you are looking for something that has great cast, dialogues and even fashion.
