The Buzz Expert’s Guide to Understanding Chakras and Energy Flow through Yoga

When most people step onto a yoga mat, their focus is often on stretching muscles, improving flexibility, or calming the mind. Yet yoga, at its core, extends beyond physical practice. It is a science of energy, emphasizing the flow of life force, or prana, through the subtle body.
Central to this energetic system are the chakras: seven spinning energy centers aligned along the spine. These chakras connect the body, mind, and spirit, each corresponding to specific organs, emotions, and states of consciousness. When energy flows freely through these centers, we experience balance and vitality. Blocked or stagnant energy, however, can manifest as physical tension, emotional struggles, or mental unrest.
The Seven Chakras
- Muladhara (Root Chakra) – Located at the base of the spine, it governs stability, security, and grounding. Postures such as Tadasana (Mountain Pose) and deep grounding breaths support this chakra, helping cultivate a sense of belonging.
- Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra) – Positioned just below the navel, it relates to creativity, sensuality, and emotional flow. Hip-opening poses like Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) help release stored emotions and stimulate creative energy.
- Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra) – Around the navel, this chakra represents personal power and confidence. Core-strengthening practices such as Navasana (Boat Pose) can help activate this inner fire.
- Anahata (Heart Chakra) – Centered in the chest, it embodies love, compassion, and forgiveness. Heart-opening asanas like Ustrasana (Camel Pose) or Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose) nurture connection and empathy.
- Vishuddha (Throat Chakra) – At the throat, it governs communication and self-expression. Practices such as chanting, mantra repetition, and mindful breathing help maintain clarity and flow.
- Ajna (Third Eye Chakra) – Between the eyebrows, this chakra is associated with intuition and insight. Meditation and focus-based techniques like Trataka (candle gazing) enhance inner awareness.
- Sahasrara (Crown Chakra) – Located at the crown of the head, it connects to higher consciousness and universal energy. Meditation, silence, and stillness support a deeper sense of connection and understanding.

Aligning Energy Through Yoga
Yoga aligns energy through a combination of physical postures, breathwork, and mindfulness. Asanas release tension in the body, naturally clearing stagnant energy. Pranayama (breath control) directs prana through energy channels called nadis, ensuring smooth circulation. Meditation and mindfulness cultivate awareness, allowing practitioners to sense subtle vibrations in the chakras.
Chakra awareness extends beyond yoga classes, it can inform everyday life. Noticing which chakra feels imbalanced allows for specific practices or lifestyle adjustments. For example, grounding poses or time in nature may soothe the root chakra, while journaling or chanting can support the throat chakra for better self-expression.
Understanding and working with the chakras offers a holistic perspective of the self, emphasizing that we are more than just body and mind. Through this awareness, yoga provides a pathway for balance, healing, and subtle transformation.
