GE Fest: The Concert That Has Kathmandu Talking | Albatross, The Elements, Swoopna Suman & The Asters and More

GE FEST

GE Fest brings out one of the most eclectic and exciting concert the city has seen this Baishakh. If you are around town this weekend, it’s time to book your tickets and let yourself relax to the sounds of Albatross, The Elements, Swoopna Suman & The Asters, Prajina, Wangden Sherpa, Sushant ra Raga and Suraj Tamang.

The Nepali New Year has always carried a particular emotional weight. It is a time when thediasporaleans toward home, when Kathmandu’s streets fill with colour and noise, and when the culture industry, sometimes unfairly overlooked during the rest of the year, gets its moment in the full light. In recent years, concert promoters have seized on Baishakh as a showcase opportunity, and this Saturday’s lineup at The Malla is the most ambitious of these efforts yet.

A Lineup Built on Contrast

What immediately strikes the eye when reading the billing is the sheer range of sound being celebrated in a single evening.Albatross, the legendary Nepali alternative rock band, sits alongside the gentle, pop-inflected soul ofSwoopna Suman & The Asters. The atmospheric indie ofThe Elementswill share the same air as the irrepressible, crowd-born energy of Sushant ra Raga.

Then there isWangden Sherpa, the “Kathmandu Cowboy,” whose soulful voice and knack for blending traditional Nepali sounds with modern pop has made him one of the more unlikely and compelling success stories of his generation. Beside him,Prajina, who has become one of the most visually compelling and sonically adventurous performers of her generation, brings a streak of cosmopolitan boldness that few of her contemporaries can match.

Completing the lineup is the always effervescent Suraj Tamang, whose melodic sensibility bridges tradition and trend with the ease of someone who has never bothered to choose between them.

The Buzz Take

Baishakh 12 will come and go, as all New Year celebrations do. But for those who find themselves in the garden of The Malla Hotel this Saturday, watching seven very different artists trade the stage across an evening lit up by Kathmandu’s spring sky, the night seems likely to linger. Some concerts are a product. This one has the makings of a memory.
