The Unstoppable Run of Swastima Khadka’s Lalibazar: 30 Days, Still Houseful | June 2026
A month after its release,Lalibazaris still drawing audiences to theatres across Nepal, a testament to the power of storytelling rooted in social truth.
Produced under the banner of Shatkon Arts, the team behind the successful Jatra franchise, Lalibazar presents a socially driven story centred on the struggles ofwomenfrom the Badi community. The story follows a woman whose life has been shaped by social pressure, poverty, and exploitation — and her quiet but fierce determination to protect her daughter from suffering the same fate.
Producer Max Dipesh Khatri has described the film’semotionalcore simply: “The film highlights a mother’s struggle and sacrifices for her child.”

The road to cinemas was not without obstacles. The film faced a legal hurdle when a court order temporarily blocked its release, before the Patan High Court lifted the stay, finally allowing it to reach audiences on Baisakh 25 (May 8, 2026).
Audiences responded withremarkablewarmth. Within three weeks of release, Lalibazar had grossed Rs 75.3 million at the domestic box office, with Saturday screenings expanding to 192 shows nationwide — up from 180 on opening day.

Directed by Yam Thapa, the film features Swastima Khadka, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Bishal Devkota, Prashamsa Subedi, Samaira Thapa, and Mukunda Shrestha, and is produced by Max Dipesh Khatri with Pradip Bhattarai serving as executive producer.
Thirty days in, Lalibazar is still winning hearts, and showing no signs of slowing down.
