Lalibazar Is Finally Releasing on May 8. Here’s Everything That Happened Before It Could
A court order. An industry united. A community’s voice. And now, a release date. The story behind Lalibazar is as complex as the film itself.
Lalibazar was never going to have a quiet release. The film, directed by Yam Thapa and presented by Shatkon Arts, tells the story of women from the Badi community, one of Nepal’s most marginalizedindigenousgroups, and the struggles they face in a society that has long reduced their identity to a single, painful stereotype. It is the kind of story that takes courage to tell. And before it even reached audiences, it had already become the center of one of the most significant debates about artistic freedom in Kollywood in recent years.
The film had been set for release on May 1, and had just received a Universal certificate from the Central Board of Film Censors, when thePatanHigh Court issued a temporary interim order halting its screening following a writ petition filed by Roshani Nepali on behalf of the Badi community, alleging that certain words in the film wounded the community’s self-respect. The premiere show, which had been planned for the eve of release, was cancelled at the last moment. The cast and crew, deep in their promotional run, were left in limbo.

The industry’s response was swift and unified. The Nepal Film Producers’ Association, Nepal Film Association, and Nepal Film Directors’ Society all issued statements condemning the restriction, and filmmakers staged a peaceful silent protest at Maitighar Mandala, wearing black armbands and observing 15 minutes of silence. The argument was clear: a film that had already cleared the censor board with a Universal certificate should not face a last-minute judicial block based on a writ that had not yet been heard in full.
On Wednesday, a bench comprising judges Khadananda Tiwari and Netraprakash Acharya at the High Court Patan refused to issue an interim order against Lalibazar, effectively clearing the way for its release. Executive producer Pradeep Bhattarai confirmed that preparations for release have been completed.
Lalibazar features actorsSwastima Khadka, Bishal Devkota, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Samaira Thapa, Prashansa Subedi, Mukund Kumar Shrestha, Abhay Baral, and Asha Paudel. It is a film about dignity, identity, and the cost of being born into acommunitythat society has never treated fairly. Whatever one’s views on the legal battle that surrounded it, the conversation it has already sparked before a single ticket was sold is a testament to how much stories like this one matter.
Lalibazar releases tomorrow, Baisakh 25, May 8. Bookings are now open.
