  1. What inspired you to pursue wildlife photography?

As a child, I fell in love with the movie “The Lion King,” which introduced me to a world of diverse animals. This sparked my passion for wildlife, leading me to watch nature channels like Animal Planet and Discovery. Inspired by their captivating portrayal of wildlife, I decided to capture Nepal’s wildlife through photography. I aimed to showcase the country’s natural beauty and raise awareness about conservation. Guided by the spirit of “The Lion King,” I embarked on a journey to capture the essence of Nepal’s biodiversity.

2. What is photography for you?

Photography, to me, is a fusion of creativity, opportunity, and skill. It has the power to infuse moments with emotion and tell stories. It is the art of capturing the essence of the quiet and unspoken, transforming them into visual masterpieces.

3. What are some of the challenges you face as a wildlife photographer?

In my journey as a wildlife photographer, I have encountered several significant challenges. Firstly, gaining permission from my parents has been a hurdle due to their concerns about the dangers that exist in the wild. Secondly, financial constraints pose difficulties when it comes to covering travel expenses, accommodation, and equipment maintenance during photography expeditions. However, the ultimate challenge lies within the jungle itself, where unpredictable animals can pose a threat to human safety. Ensuring their calmness and capturing pictures becomes a test of skill and composure. Despite these challenges, my passion for wildlife photography drives me to overcome obstacles and capture the beauty of the natural world.

4. Please share your most challenging photography experience with us.

During one of my photography expeditions at Koshi Tappu, I encountered a nerve-wracking situation with wild elephants during COVID 19 lockdown at Char Koshe Jhadi, Dharan. Initially, they seemed calm and unproblematic, allowing me to click pictures. However, without warning, the elephants suddenly began throwing branches at me, making the situation increasingly dangerous. Swiftly, I retreated to a safer location and shifted my focus to capturing images of small pranticoles instead. It was a frightening experience, witnessing how quickly the elephants’ behavior changed and realizing the imminent threat they posed. Such encounters remind me of the unpredictable nature of wildlife photography and the need for caution and respect when capturing these incredible creatures in their natural habitats.

5. Can you share a memorable or unique experience you’ve had while photographing wildlife?

I had two unforgettable and unique experiences during my wildlife photography journey. The first was when I encountered a Bengal fox and its pups. Despite being aware of my presence, they seemed comfortable with my presence, allowing me to observe them up close. It was an incredible opportunity to witness their behavior and capture intimate moments through my lens.

The second remarkable encounter was with a jackal in Dibyanagar, Chitwan. Spotting the jackal from a distance, I decided to stealthily follow it, crawling and taking care not to disturb its natural movements. After finding a suitable spot, I remained still, and to my surprise, the jackal approached me, coming as close as 15 meters. In that precious moment, I was able to capture stunning images of the jackal and deeply appreciate its beauty. These encounters stand out as cherished memories, reminding me of the unique and unpredictable experiences that wildlife photography offers.

6. What equipment and techniques do you find most useful for capturing stunning wildlife shots?

In wildlife photography, equipment is not the sole determinant of capturing great images. I have successfully photographed wildlife using a camera worth 65,000 rupees, emphasizing that creativity and skill are crucial. Expensive gear doesn’t guarantee superior results. Basic photography skills, like understanding exposure and being patient, are more important than fancy equipment. Focus on capturing the best shots in-camera rather than relying heavily on post-processing. By prioritizing creativity and knowledge, we can overcome equipment limitations and produce impactful wildlife photographs.

7. Are there any particular wildlife conservation issues that you’re passionate about?

As a wildlife photographer, I am passionate about several wildlife conservation issues that are crucial for the protection and preservation of the country’s biodiversity, but my major focus is on conservation education and awareness. I strongly believe in the power of education and raising awareness to foster a culture of conservation. By educating local communities, children, and tourists about the importance of wildlife conservation, we can promote a sense of responsibility and encourage sustainable practices that protect Nepal’s diverse wildlife.

8. Can you share some tips for capturing unique and rare moments in wildlife photography?

Wildlife photography is unpredictable, relying on a photographer’s luck. Don’t give up; keep trying. The more you explore, the more you learn about animals and wildlife. Persistence is key to capturing unique moments. Embrace the challenges, adapt to changing conditions, and remain patient. With dedication and practice, you’ll develop a deeper understanding and increase your chances of capturing extraordinary photographs. Remember, in wildlife photography, perseverance and passion lead to unforgettable encounters.

9. Please let us know your favorite part of being a wildlife photographer.

One of my favorite aspects of being a wildlife photographer is the opportunity to travel to different places. I have a deep love for being in the jungle, as it brings me a sense of peace and tranquility. Holding a camera in my hands and capturing pictures of birds, animals, and even insects fills me with joy and provides a much-needed release from everyday stress. The connection I feel with nature through photography is truly uplifting and brings a sense of calm to my life.

10. What advice would you give to someone who wants to capture compelling wildlife images without disturbing the animals or their natural behavior?

When venturing into the habitat of wild animals for a photography shoot, it is crucial to remember a few key points. Extensive research on the animal’s traits and habits is essential. Respecting their space and presence is paramount. Utilizing a long lens and maintaining a safe distance and silence are important for both your safety and the animal’s well-being. Patience is key, allowing you to capture the animal’s natural behavior. To create impactful photos, focus on composition and storytelling, employing your creativity while exploring the surroundings cautiously. By adhering to these guidelines, you can capture stunning wildlife photographs while ensuring harmonious coexistence with the animals.
