Food, Art & Culture : The Nanee, Bhaktapur

Bhaktapur, on the eastern side of the Kathmandu Valley, is home to the lovely and serene boutique hotel known as The Nanee.  Bhaktapur, one of the oldest city holds 100s of temples and courtyards, rich architecture and epitomizes the Newari settlement. The very essence of Bhaktapur is reflected at The Nanee.

The property is full of uniquely beautiful contemporary arts inspired by the five elements: earth, air, water, fire and space. “Nanee” is a Newari word that literally denotes a courtyard or a chowk. A modest, yet lovely courtyard is located at the center of the structure.

We were thrilled to try the multi-cuisines served at the restaurant of The Nanee with touch of Newari in every flavour. What makes it even more special is their mindfulness of carbon footprints and supporting the local farmers, all the while serving delectable food.

You can either snack on their delicious dishes in their cozy restaurant or sip on some frenzy drinks in their rooftop seatings.

Roasted Pumpkin Soup

The soup is a beautiful golden colour. The sweetness of the pumpkin instantly hits your palate while the minimal spices add warmth and depth to it. Overall, paired with the garlic bread, it gives a warm and satisfying taste.

Grilled Chicken Salad

A flavorful palate that will appeal to health lovers. Greens, marinated chicken, croutons, olives, and many other ingredients fill this dish. In general, the herbs and flavours used in the chicken are not overpowering but are just right. The outside of the chicken has a slight charred flavor, while the inside is tender. This salad is filling and delectable.

Pork Belly

A precisely prepared dish with side vegetables and spinach sauté and mashed potatoes. This is not your typical pork belly. It has been braised for two days in boiling water with cloves and other spices. A balanced ratio between the fat and the meat results in succulent meat and a buttery-textured fat. Brown sugar used in the sauce gives it a subtle sweetness that is used to top the pork belly. The spinach on the side is prepared in the traditional Newari manner and tastes exactly how it should. This dish is rich and excellent all around.

The meal was made even more enjoyable when paired with a Nanee Special drink.

Pangasius fish

This local fish is one of the top sellers here and has a mildly sweet flavour. The presentation itself is a delight for the eyes and is accompanied by microgreens and mashed potatoes.  The outer layer is very well-seasoned and has spices infused throughout, giving it a smoky taste from the grill. The fish’s taste is enhanced and given a slight sourness by the lemon butter sauce. Overall, this meal is mouthwateringly good.
