From concept to creation: Jwala Raj Pokharel

Jwala Raj Pokharel, a fashion designer with a unique perspective on style and creativity. He is the owner of Shuvashree Shuva Rang outlets located at Samakhusi. In conversation, he takes us through his journey as a fashion designer.

How do you introduce yourself? 

I believe I’m an enthusiastic person.

How did you start your journey in the fashion industry?

I took my family business forward and later persuaded a diploma in fashion designing to explore and develop a career in Fashion Designing.

What is your design philosophy or aesthetic?

I’m all about styling with love and grace.

How do you stay up-to-date on the latest trends in fashion?

I do shows both nationally as well as internationally, thus, it helps me stay in line with the latest trends.

What do you think sets your designs apart from others in the industry?

I believe that everybody, even the average person, can enjoy designer clothing. I don’t only style well-known people.

How do you balance creativity with commercial appeal while designing?

By detailing and focusing on fabric selection according to trend in the industry and taste of customers.

Can you tell us about a time when you faced a creative challenge and how did you overcome it?

Indeed, I corrected Mr. Nepal’s outfit in 2018 within a 24-hour period when there was a problem.

How do you stay inspired and continue to come up with fresh ideas?

I invest a lot of my time in learning about culture and traditions of different nations which helps me stay inspired.

What do you consider to be your greatest strength as a fashion designer?

I create designs for both men and women, but I think my designs for men are my finest.

Can you tell us about a collection or piece you’ve designed that you’re particularly proud of?

The attire that I designed in a show while I was studying and was placed the2nd runner up. 

Can you tell us about a time when you had to meet a tight deadline and how you handled it?

Nearly every season involves a tight deadline, which we meet by working into the night and starting early in the morning.

What are the changes that you have seen in the fashion industry of Nepal since the inception of your journey in this field?

When I started my journey, the fashion scenario of Nepal was different. There were mostly female fashion designers and very few people would actually wear designer clothes. As of now, men are equally participating in designing and almost 80% of people prefer designer clothes.

How do you handle criticism or negative feedback?

I would try to take it in a positive light and improvise on things if it is a constructive criticism.

Any new project or collaborations coming up?

Yes, Lucknow International Fashion Week, Mr. Nepal 2023, Runway Fashion Week, to name a few.

What do you consider the biggest achievement so far? 

Best Dress in Mr. Nepal 2019 has to be the greatest achievement.
