Nepal Is Having a Tourism Moment — And the Numbers Prove It, June 2026
Nepal has long been a dream destination for trekkers, mountaineers, and spiritual seekers. But in 2026, something bigger appears to be happening — and the data tells a compelling story.
100,000 Tourists in a Single Month
The Nepal Tourism Board has reported that foreign tourist arrivals crossed the 100,000 threshold in May 2026, with 102,626 international travelers entering the country — a 19 percent increase compared to the 86,216 visitors recorded in May last year, and comfortably ahead of Nepal’s pre-pandemic May 2019 baseline of 78,329.
The numbers are not just a recovery story. They are agrowthstory.
The World Is Coming to Nepal
The momentum did not stop at tourist arrivals. The sixth edition of the Himalayan Travel Mart (HTM 2026), held in Kathmandu from June 1 to June 4, attracted over 600 international delegates from 27 countries, bringing together 75 international buying firms and over 80 global sellers for business-to-business networking sessions.
Organized by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Nepal Chapter under the promotionalslogan“New Dimensions of Tourism,” the event took foreign delegates on curated introductory tours to Pokhara, Lumbini, Haibung, Kirtipur, and Namobuddha — pitching Nepal as the premier gateway to the Himalayas.
For an industry that spent years clawing back from the devastation of the pandemic, seeing Nepal actively court the world’s travel buyers on this scale feels significant.

Nepal’s Passport Is Getting Stronger Too
The good news extends beyond inbound tourism. Nepal climbed four places in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, improving its global ranking from 101st last year to 97th, with Nepali passport holders now able to travel to 35 destinations with either visa-free access or visa on arrival.
It is amodestbut meaningful step — one that reflects a gradual shift in how Nepal is perceived on the global stage.

A Country Ready to Be Discovered
What these numbers collectively suggest is that Nepal is no longer content to simply exist on the tourist map — it is actively shaping its place on it. From the peaks of theHimalayasto the cultural richness of the Kathmandu Valley, the country is making a confident case for itself as one of Asia’s most exciting travel destinations.
For anyone still sleeping on Nepal, 2026 might just be the year to wake up.
