Palesha Goverdhan: Nepal’s First Paralympic Medalist

Nepal’s sporting history reached a new milestone as Palesha Goverdhan brought home the country’s first-ever Paralympic medal from the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The 21-year-old taekwondo athlete secured a bronze medal in the women’s K44-57kg category, marking a significant achievement for both her and the nation.

Born with a genetic limb deficiency in her left hand, Palesha started her journey in martial arts at the age of 10. Her coach quickly recognized her potential, and what began as a hobby soon turned into a professional pursuit. At the Paris Paralympics, she faced Serbia’s Marija Micev in a tense bronze medal match, ultimately winning 15-8 to secure her place in Nepal’s sporting history.
Her victory not only brought pride to Nepal but also spotlighted the vast potential of para-athletes in the country. While para-sports have often been neglected, Palesha’s success is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with dedication and support.

Upon her return to Kathmandu, Palesha received a hero’s welcome, with cheering crowds, traditional music, and the Nepal government’s announcement of a tax-free prize of NRs 65 lakhs. Her achievement is a source of inspiration for young athletes across Nepal, showing that even the biggest dreams can be realized with hard work.
Palesha’s journey to the forum is just the beginning, as she hopes her success will pave the way for future athletes to shine on the world stage.
