Protect Your Skin During Summer Months

Summer in Nepal can be intense, with long sunny days and high UV levels, especially in regions like the Terai. While the bright sunshine is welcome, it also increases the risk of skin damage from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Sun-safe skincare is essential to protect your skin and maintain a healthy complexion during the hot season. Here are some effective tips for keeping your skin safe and glowing throughout the summer.

Sunscreen- Your Best Defense

Sunscreen is the most critical element of sun protection. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, which protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it generously to all exposed areas of your skin, including the face, neck, arms, and hands. Don’t forget spots like your ears and the back of your neck! For the best results, reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you are spending time outdoors, sweating, or swimming.

Cover Up with Protective Clothing

In addition to sunscreen, wearing protective clothing is a great way to minimize sun exposure. Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) rating offers extra shielding from the sun. In Nepal’s summer heat, loose-fitting cotton clothes are ideal as they are breathable and comfortable, while still providing coverage.

Hydration for Healthy Skin

Summer heat can quickly dehydrate your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is key to keeping your skin hydrated from within. Incorporating hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelons, and oranges into your diet also helps maintain skin’s moisture. Using a hydrating moisturizer that contains aloe vera or hyaluronic acid can lock in moisture and soothe sun-exposed skin.

Avoid Peak Sun Hours

The sun is at its strongest between 10 AM and 4 PM. Try to limit your exposure during these hours, especially in high-altitude regions of Nepal where the sun’s intensity is amplified. If you must be outside, seek shade as much as possible to avoid prolonged exposure.

After-Sun Care

If your skin feels hot or irritated after being in the sun, apply a soothing after-sun lotion with aloe vera or chamomile to calm redness and replenish lost moisture. This will help in restoring the skin’s health and preventing peeling.

By following these tips, you can enjoy Nepal’s summer season while keeping your skin safe and healthy!
