Sambaa’s Injury Exposes Harsh Reality for Nepal’s Football Heroes
Nepal women’s national football team captain Sabitra Bhandari, widely known as “Sambaa,” has found herself at the center of an emotional and widely discussed situation after revealing her struggle to secure treatment for a serious ACL injury.
The star striker, who has carried the hopes of Nepali football for years, recently took to social media with a heartfelt appeal, sharing that she had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear requiring urgent medical treatment. The estimated cost of surgery and rehabilitation was reported to be around USD 80,000, an amount far beyond what most athletes in Nepal can afford without strong institutional support.

In her message, Bhandari expressed both vulnerability and frustration, opening up about the uncertainty she faced despite years of dedicated service representing the nation. Her appeal quickly gained traction, sparking an outpouring of support from fans, fellow athletes, and the broader public. Many expressed concern about the reality faced by national athletes, especially those who have consistently brought pride to Nepal through their performances.
Adding to the concern was the financial limitation faced by the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), which was reportedly unable to fully cover her treatment due to budget constraints. The situation sparked widespread discussion, with many questioning the level of support available to national players during critical moments in their careers.
In response, supporters from across Nepal and beyond stepped forward to help. Many individuals began contributing financially, offering donations and sharing her appeal across social media in an effort to ease the burden of her treatment costs. Kathmandu Medical College, under the leadership of Dr. Sunil Kumar Sharma also stepped forward and announced that it would provide her treatment free of cost. The overwhelming support highlighted the deep respect and admiration Sambaa has earned, not only as an exceptional footballer but also as a national icon who has inspired countless fans.

Bhandari’s journey is one defined by perseverance and achievement. Rising from humble beginnings, she went on to become Nepal’s all-time leading goal scorer and one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history. Her leadership, consistency, and passion have made her an irreplaceable presence on the national team and a role model for aspiring athletes.
An ACL injury is one of the most challenging setbacks for any footballer, often requiring surgery followed by months of intensive rehabilitation. For a player like Bhandari, whose game relies heavily on speed, agility, and attacking precision, the injury presents both physical and emotional hurdles.

While this support has brought relief and renewed hope, the situation has also sparked broader conversations about athlete welfare and the systems in place to protect those who represent the country on the international stage. For many, Samba’s case has become more than just an injury, it has highlighted the challenges faced by athletes who dedicate their lives to representing Nepal.
As she begins her journey toward recovery, fans across the nation continue to stand firmly behind their captain, hopeful that Samba will return stronger and once again inspire the next generation of Nepali footballers.
