Nepal’s Messi: Beyond the Field

The Inspiring Journey of Preeti Rai

When people talk about modern Nepali women’s football, one name consistently rises above the rest: Preeti Rai. Fondly known as “Nepal’s Messi,” the midfield maestro has carved her own identity through grit, creativity, and relentless ambition. But beyond her dazzling footwork and match-winning goals lies a quieter, more introspective side one that finds comfort in coffee, music, and the gentle strum of a guitar.

Though her roots trace back to Solukhumbu, Preeti was born and raised in Kathmandu. Growing up alongside her brothers, football entered her life naturally. “Everything they did, I tried to do too,” she recalls. Encouraged by a supportive mother who believed sports should never be limited by gender, Preeti joined the Nepal Youth Program (NYP) at just 11, training alongside boys. It was there that football transformed from childhood play into purpose.

In a society where female athletes often face skepticism, Preeti’s greatest strength came from home. Her mother stood firmly by her side, even when criticism grew louder. “She never gave up on me, even when others did,” Preeti says: a belief that became the foundation of her resilience.

At only 16 years old, Preeti made her senior debut for the Nepal Women’s National Team against Bangladesh, and scored. While the moment was historic, the joy of making her parents proud mattered most. That debut marked the beginning of a career defined by responsibility and passion.

Preeti doesn’t shy away from comparisons with the footballing great. In fact, she embraces them. Known for her vision, assists, and goal-scoring ability, she describes her style simply: “I want to control the game. I want to decide how it unfolds.” For her, football is as much about intelligence as it is about flair.

Among her many international outings including the WAFF and SAFF Women’s Championships, the Four Nations Cup holds a special place in her heart. It was a tournament that revealed her growth, tested her limits, and reinforced her belief in constant evolution. Despite representing Nepal at the highest level, criticism has never completely faded. Preeti’s response is unwavering focus. “I do what I love. Everything else doesn’t matter.” That mindset has carried her beyond borders.

Having played club football in India and now for Etihad Club in Jordan, Preeti acknowledges the challenges of adapting to new systems and teammates. Trust, chemistry, and continuous improvement become non-negotiable abroad. Her efforts paid off as Etihad clinched back-to-back league titles in 2023 and 2024, placing her in a high-performance, winning environment.

Away from football, Preeti prefers solitude; music in her ears, guitar in hand, coffee by her side. It’s in these quiet moments that she recharges, reminding us that even the fiercest competitors need calm.

Preeti Rai’s journey is more than a football story. It’s a testament to belief, discipline, and self-evolution. As she continues to shine internationally, she remains a symbol of what Nepali women can achieve when talent meets unwavering support. For countless young girls dreaming of the pitch, Preeti Rai isn’t just Nepal’s Messi, she’s proof that dreams are valid, and achievable.
