Smith Tamang: The Runway Choreographer Redefining Nepal’s Fashion Stage

Growing up in Nayabazaar, Kathmandu, Smith Tamang discovered his passion at just six years old after watching Lara Dutta win Miss Universe 2000. With little support at home, he practiced in quiet corners and streets, inspired by icons like Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and Gisele Bündchen. These early experiences shaped his strong sense of rhythm, presence, and inner confidence: the foundation of his work today.

Over time, Smith realized runway walking was more than technique; it was about posture, energy, and self-awareness. Teaching others helped him find his true purpose: guiding individuals to walk with confidence from within. What began as helping friends evolved into a full-fledged commitment to choreography and mentorship.

Although Smith entered the fashion industry around 2016, his real breakthrough came with Miss Universe Nepal 2021, Sujita Basnet. Thanks to a recommendation from his friend Arati Subba to then–National Director Nagma Shrestha, the opportunity marked a defining moment in his career and reaffirmed his place in Nepal’s fashion and pageant industry.

Smith has worked on numerous fashion events and pageants, valuing the teamwork and detail that goes into each project. But his greatest pride lies in the transformation of his students: many of whom begin with uncertainty and grow into confident, graceful performers. Their progress mirrors his own journey of patience, resilience, and self-belief.

He describes his process as a balance of yin and yang; allowing creativity to flow while staying grounded in practicality. Whether teaching beginners or leading teams, he focuses on harmony, understanding strengths, and creating a collective rhythm that brings his vision to life.

Smith’s biggest challenges were internal. Learning to understand himself, manage emotions, and embrace authenticity shaped both his craft and his character. He believes runway walking reflects inner strength, and he encourages every individual to walk – on stage and in life – as the “queen or king” of their own story.

His daily practices include working out, walking, and dancing in heels; routines that bring him joy, confidence, and energy. These rituals help him stay connected to his purpose and maintain physical and emotional balance.

Beyond choreography, Smith is surprisingly a homemaker. He nurtures plants, enjoys reading across genres, and follows a spiritual practice that keeps him grounded. These peaceful habits nourish his creativity and bring depth to his professional work.

Smith lives by a simple message from his mother: “Everything has its limit.” This wisdom reminds him to live passionately, work with intention, and set boundaries when needed: a philosophy that keeps him centered in both life and art.
