The Buzz Netflix Pick

F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

“I’ll be there for you…” – just five words, and those who know it have their hands clapping four times in a row in their heads, and some, their hands already into motion. That’s the magic of 2000s American sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S that still keeps you laughing, crying, and binge-watching decades after it first aired.

When F.R.I.E.N.D.S first aired on September 22, 1994, no one could have predicted that it would become one of the most beloved and influential sitcoms in television history. F.R.I.E.N.D.S was more than just a TV show – it was a cultural phenomenon. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, the show followed the lives of six twenty-something friends trying to figure out life, love, and career in New York City. But somewhere between the awkward first dates and endless cups of Central Perk coffee, F.R.I.E.N.D.S became a worldwide obsession. F.R.I.E.N.D.S was more than just a hit show – it’s a global comfort blanket, a cultural phenomenon, and for many of us, the go-to background noise that feels like home.

Each character in F.R.I.E.N.D.S brought a spark that made the ensemble cast completely irresistible:

  • Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston): From runaway bride to fashion icon, Rachel’s journey is one of independence and growth.

  • Ross Geller (David Schwimmer): The awkward paleontologist with a PhD and three divorces. His on-and-off love saga with Rachel is still debated across the globe.

  • Monica Geller (Courteney Cox): The competitive, compulsively clean chef with a big heart. She’s the glue that holds the group together. She’s the mother of the group.

  • Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry): With his unmatched sarcasm and secretly tender soul, Chandler gave us some of the funniest (and most relatable) lines in sitcom history.

  • Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc): The food-loving, struggling actor who stole our hearts with his simplicity, innocence, and the legendary line: “How you doin’?” (Which has become the way of flirting among the F.R.I.E.N.D.S fans.) And oh, the backpacking across Western Europe story… How can we miss that, right? The one story that started a new beginning for our R&R ship.

  • Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow): Eccentric, spiritual, and musically gifted (sort of). With her offbeat humor and “Smelly Cat,” she made weird cool. Her marriage scene, on the snowy street, has become a dream wedding for many.

Our two favorite ships, Mondler and R&R, made the show even more addictive. Fortunately, the showrunners didn’t end up pairing Monica and Joey – which was actually their initial plan – or else, how could we have gotten our beloved Mondler ship, right fellas? Anyway, how did you like Richard and Monica? I would’ve been fine with that too, but my forever favorite is always going to be Monica and Chandler – “Mondler.”

Together, they weren’t just roommates and neighbors – they were a family. And over 10 seasons and 236 episodes, they became our family too. They became our friends too – friends to whom we cry when our heart is heavy, laugh when we are in joy, and snuggle to when we feel low.

What made F.R.I.E.N.D.S click wasn’t just the laughs – it was the relatability. The show wasn’t afraid to showcase the messiness of young adulthood. Careers flopped, hearts broke, rents were due – and yet, the group always came back to that orange couch and each other. It became the TV equivalent of comfort food. We can’t forget the final episode. The final episode, when the group left their apartment keys on the counter and walked out together, it wasn’t just a TV farewell. It felt like saying goodbye to six real friends we’d grown up with.

Even today, F.R.I.E.N.D.S continues to find new audiences on streaming platforms. It’s not just nostalgia; it’s a timeless portrayal of human connection. From New York to Kathmandu, the charm of Monica’s obsessive cleaning or Chandler’s awkward jokes translates universally. From Kathmandu cafés to dorm rooms across Nepal, Friends has become a shared experience for many young Nepalis. It’s dubbed, subtitled, quoted, and even meme-ified. You’ll find F.R.I.E.N.D.S -themed coffee shops, merchandise, and Instagram pages dedicated to its iconic scenes.

In May 2021, the long-awaited F.R.I.E.N.D.S – The Reunion special aired, bringing back all six stars for a heartfelt, nostalgic sit-down. There were tears, laughter, behind-the-scenes stories, and even a surprise rendition of “Smelly Cat” with Lady Gaga. The reunion wasn’t about continuing the story – it was about honoring it. And in doing so, it reignited the global love for the series once again.

In a world that’s constantly changing, F.R.I.E.N.D.S is a reminder that some things — like loyal friendships, shared laughter, and figuring life out together – are timeless. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth rewatch, F.R.I.E.N.D.S always has a way of making you feel like you’re part of the gang.

So go ahead – press play, pour yourself a coffee, and laugh along. Because even if no one told you life was gonna be this way, F.R.I.E.N.D.S will always be there for you.
