Brazil 1-1 Morocco: Two Top-10 Sides Share the Points

In a pulsating Group C opener at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, five-time champions Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco — the only two teams ranked inside FIFA’s top 10 to meet in the first round of this expanded 48-nation tournament.

Haiti 0-1 Scotland: McGinn Ends 36-Year Wait

Australia 2-0 Turkey: Irankunda’s Dream Night

The day’s final fixture in Vancouver produced the biggest shock of the round. Australia pulled off a surprise victory, beating Turkey 2-0, in a disciplined and dominant performance that moved them into second place in Group D, trailing only the United States.

Nestory Irankunda became the youngest Socceroos player ever to score at a FIFA World Cup, opening the scoring in the 27th minute. Connor Metcalfe doubled the lead in the second half, sealing all three points for Australia.

Türkiye dominatedpossessionat 59 percent to 30 percent and registered 30 shots compared to Australia’s nine, but goalkeeper Patrick Beach — handed a surprise start ahead of captain Mat Ryan — produced eight saves to keep a clean sheet, with Harry Souttar making several critical blocks in the dying moments.

The win marks Australia’s first World Cup opening match victory since 2006, when the Socceroos defeated Japan. Speaking after the match, Irankunda — who was named Player of the Match — said it felt like a “dream come true,” and revealed his post-goal celebration, a punch of the corner flag, was a tribute to his hero Tim Cahill.

With the United States already on three points following their own win, both Australia and Turkey knew they could not afford to drop points — and it was the Socceroos who walked away with the perfect start.
