How Nepalese Break the Fast

Morning really shows the day. So the breakfast you eat has to be simple, comforting, and packed with flavors. And Nepali breakfasts are just that. Here is our pick of favorite traditional Nepali breakfast.
Chiya & Puff
No Nepali breakfast is complete without dudh chiya. (If you prefer black tea over milk tea, there is seriously something wrong with you). Sipping milk tea in the morning is not just a ritual, it is a way of living a happy life. And while there might be fancy cookies available to pair with chiya, puff is the only right option. Dunk it in your chiya, and the moment you take a bite, you get this satisfying crunch followed by the soft, layered texture inside. What does a person need more than this? The aroma, the mess, the sweetness and the texture instantly wakes you up and is the perfect way to start your day.

Sel Roti & Chiya
Notice what I did there? You’re right. Chiya is the secret. Whatever you have in the morning, you need to have chiya on your side. Sel roti is an emotion. The best ones are crispy on the outside with a soft, slightly chewy center, carrying a mild sweetness that pairs like a dream. The contrast between the crunchy, slightly sweet sel roti gives you a taste of heaven while alive.

Gwaramari
In Kathmandu, early morning tea stalls sell freshly fried gwaramari (I mentioned Chiya again). The aroma of the fried oil as you pass the stalls make it impossible to turn your head away and ignore it. The brown bread balls are crispy on the outside and irresistibly soft and airy on the inside. They have a subtle saltiness, making them perfect for dunking in a steaming hot cup of chiya. What I like about gwaramari is that you can eat it without guilt, as you can reason it with “I got up early and went for a walk to get the gwaramari”.

Nepali breakfasts are simple but hit the spot every time. Which one’s your go-to?
