Rekha Thapa Is Back Behind the Camera After 8 Long Years with Maya Bhanekai Yasto Hola
One of Kollywood’s most iconic names is returning to direction, and this time she’s doing things a little differently.
Rekha Thapaneeds no introduction in the Nepalifilm industry. As an actress, she has built one of the most recognizable careers in Kollywood over the past two decades. But it’s her work as a director that has always set her apart, and after eight years away from the chair, she is finally back. Her third directorial venture, Maya Bhanekai Yasto Hola, has officially wrapped filming and is set for a nationwide theatrical release on September 11, timed to coincide with Kushe Aunsi, Nepal’s Father’s Day, with Teej falling just days later on September 14.
What makes this comeback particularly interesting is the way Rekha has chosen to approach it. For the first time, she is stepping back entirely from acting and focusing solely on direction. And for the first time, she is working outside her own banner, Rekha Films, collaborating instead under the production house Diya and Amu Films, produced by Hari Narayan Shrestha and Maya Devi Shrestha. It’s a deliberate shift, a clear signal that this project is about more than just adding another credit to her name. Rekha is stretching herself, and the industry is paying attention.
The cast is nothing short of a statement in itself. Veteran actorMadan Krishna Shresthaleads alongside Dil Shrestha, who is returning to films after a long absence. Joining them are former Miss Nepals Shristi Shrestha and Namrata Shrestha, former Miss Nepal International Niti Shah, and former Miss Nepal Usha Khadgi in a special appearance. That is three former Miss Nepals on one screen, under one director. It’s the kind of ensemble that does not happen by accident.
The film itself is a love story, written by Dhurba Lamsal and shot by cinematographer Sudeep Baral, with principal photography completed over 27 days at multiple locations around Kathmandu including the Royal Tulip National Park in Shivapuri. The story explores the true definition of love through social themes, carried by a cast that brings both experience and freshness to the screen.
Rekha’s previous directorial efforts, Himmatwali and Malika, performed well at the box office and showed a director with a genuine instinct for commercial Nepali cinema. Eight years is a long time, but the buzz surrounding Maya Bhanekai Yasto Hola suggests that audiences have been waiting.
Distribution rights have been secured by Rich Entertainment, Apple Entertainment, and FD Company for a nationwide rollout. All signs point to a significant theatrical run.
September 11 is still a few months away, but Maya Bhanekai Yasto Hola is already one of the most anticipatedKollywoodreleases of 2083. Watch for it.
