Beyond Footwork: The Soulful Dance of Kathak with Namrata KC

Namrata KC, a Kathak Dancer, choreographer, instructor and theatre director, since 2006 has been actively involved in dance and theater industries nationally and internationally. She is also the co-founder and director of Aesthetic Dance Studio. Since February 2024, she has been running Navya Naachghar, a theatre center in Sinamangal, Kathmandu where experimental dance theatre productions are staged regularly.
Kathak serves as a platform for connection and community and is more than just dance. One of the most beautiful aspects of teaching Kathak is how it naturally cultivates focus and discipline without students even realizing it. As they immerse themselves in rhythm, footwork and expressions, they develop a sharp concentration that enhances both their mental and physical well being.

There are collaborations with different professionals from other artistic disciplines and dance styles, inviting them to participate in exclusive training sessions and exchange experiences. In addition to improving technical proficiency, these partnerships give students a greater understanding of movement, expression, and storytelling across various styles.
There is a story flowing in every movement, gesture, and rhythm of Kathak. Whether using classic mythological themes or modern personal experiences, Kathak offers the freedom and access to bring the stories of identity, hardship, strength, and transformation to life.

Through Namrata KC’s vision, Kathak becomes more than tradition it becomes a living, breathing art of storytelling and connection. At Navya Naachghar, each step and gesture invites us to experience dance as a journey of identity, rhythm and transformation.
