Subani Moktan: In Her Own Words

Subani Moktan

Some artists make music; others live it. Subani Moktan, a name many recognize instantly, is one of those rare voices that feels both familiar and fresh. In this article, she lets us in on her journey, her inspirations, and the simple joys that shape her world beyond the stage.

“I am a singer/songwriter and a voice artist.”

That’s how Subani chooses to introduce herself – no frills, just facts. But behind that simplicity lies years of passion, performance, and persistence.

Music has always been part of her world, even in her earliest memories.

“My earlier memories consist of participating in many music competitions, some I won, some I lost. But I remember having a great time in all of them… Hanging out with friends who loved music, learning new instruments, and just having an overall fantastic time!”

But had life taken a different turn, what would she be doing?

“I might have been a librarian or maybe a bookshop owner, since I love reading so much! Or I might have been living on an island somewhere, swimming, and scuba diving every chance I got, which isn’t technically a career path, I guess. I could have also tried my hand at acting? Or maybe business. The possibilities are endless, but I’m glad music found me first!”

Ever pictured Subani Moktan not singing? What if she ran a cozy bookshop or starred in a movie?

Growing up, Subani was a little bit of everything.
“I was both quiet and loud, I think, depending on the day or where I was. I do like to think I wasn’t a handful to my parents, but maybe they wouldn’t agree.”

Of course, when your mother is legendary singer Kunti Moktan, the musical bond runs deep – but their connection is much more than just artistic.
“It’s been great, like all other mother-daughter relationships.”

When it comes to staying grounded, Subani credits a small, trusted circle – and herself.

“Mostly, me. I know who I am offstage. And I have a very small circle of friends and family who keep me grounded.”

As for the musicians who’ve shaped her artistry, it’s a long and legendary list:

“There are tons of artists who’ve inspired me. Hira Devi Waiba, Aruna Lama, Nabin K Bhattarai, Nima Rumba, 1974 AD, all the amazing singers and musicians I’ve grown up listening to have helped shape my music career.”

And finally, when asked what might surprise people about her, she says it how it is:

“Don’t think there is much that could surprise them, I’ve been under media scrutiny for the longest time, and don’t have much else to add.”

In an industry that often pushes personas, Subani Moktan is a breath of fresh air – honest, grounded, and entirely herself. Subani Moktan continues to carve her path in Nepal’s music scene with authenticity, passion, and purpose. Her journey reflects not only her artistic versatility but also her commitment to staying true to herself. Whether she’s performing on stage, lending her voice to new projects, or inspiring the next generation of musicians, Subani remains a powerful voice – both literally and metaphorically. And through it all, she reminds us that music isn’t just about sound – it’s about soul, stories, and the courage to keep evolving.
