Olivia Rodrigo Hosted SNL for the First Time, and She Brought Debbie Harry, an Unreleased Song, and a Jake Paul Joke
She came to 30 Rock as a host, not just a musical guest. And she made every second count.
Olivia Rodrigo has done SNL before. She appeared as musical guest in May 2021 behind Sour and again in December 2023 behind Guts. But Saturday, May 3 was different. This time, Rodrigo walked out to host theshowfor the very first time, and she arrived with a full bag of surprises.
The episode opened with Rodrigo delivering a monologue that revisited her Disney Channel origins on Bizaardvark, complete with a jab at former co-star Jake Paul, before launching into a musical parody of her breakout hit drivers license, cleverly reworked into a story about getting a Real ID at the DMV. It was the kind of self-aware, sharp-witted opening that reminded everyone that Rodrigo is not just a pop star. She is genuinely funny.
The musicalperformanceswere the highlight of the night. For her first set, Debbie Harry of the legendary new wave band Blondie walked out to introduce Rodrigo’s performance of drop dead, her current No. 1 single and the lead track from her upcoming third album. The pairing carried real symbolic weight, Harry and Blondie having defined one generation’s idea of guitar-driven pop with an edge, and Rodrigo doing much the same for hers. Watching the two share a stage, even briefly, was one of those SNLmomentsthat people will be talking about for a while.
For her second performance, Heated Rivalry star Connor Storrie introduced Rodrigo’s rendition of begged, a previously unreleased ballad from her forthcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. The song, still unheard by the public before that night, gave the audience their first real taste of where the album is headed emotionally, and early reactions suggest it landed exactly as intended.
You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, produced by longtimecollaboratorDan Nigro, is due June 12. drop dead, the album’s lead single, has already debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making Rodrigo the first artist in history to have the lead singles of her first three albums all debut at the top of the chart. begged suggests the rest of the record will have plenty more to say.
