The King of Pop, Reimagined on the Big Screen

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan, Michael follows the life of the iconic American singer, covering his journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s all the way through his explosive early solo career. The film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before, highlighting his life off-stage and some of his most iconic performances.

The film’s most talked-about element is its lead actor. Jackson’s real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, takes on the iconic role, blending family legacy with professional performance, with the film featuring stunning recreations of signature moments including the Thriller music video and electrifying Super Bowl performances. Jaafar’s uncanny ability to channel his uncle in his dancing, the voice, and the mannerisms, has been universally praised even by critics who found other aspects of the film lacking.

The supporting cast includes Colman Domingo as the feared Joseph (Joe) Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as long-time adviser John Branca.

A Troubled Production Finally Arrives

The road to the big screen was anything but smooth. With a reported production budget of around $155 million, Michael ranks among the most expensive music biopics ever produced. After extensive reshoots and legal hurdles, the film finally found its way to screens worldwide, and to QFX Nepal.

What the Film Covers

Michael presents the story only up until the release of Bad, focusing on the artist at the peak of his early popularity and popularity with the Jackson 5.The film spans multiple decades, showcasing his most fatal injury on a commercial shoot, to the 1984 Victory Tour, the Jackson 5’s final tour together, concluding with Michael declaring on stage that this would be the brothers’ last tour as a group.

Theconcertsequences in particular are a spectacle with the ability to leave viewers dancing, and reminiscing. The production quality and Jaafar Jackson’s recreation of some of Michael’s iconic performances are quite the treat to the eyes and ears.

The Moment Everyone Is Talking About

For those who attended Wednesday’s preview at QFX, the biggest moment came right at the end. In a dramatic, MCU-style pre-credits reveal, the screen goes black and the words appear: “Hisstorywill continue.”

The audience reaction was electric, and for good reason. Lionsgate has confirmed the intent behind the message, stating that the unusual circumstances of theproduction“gave us the opportunity to shoot more material for what is effectively a Part 1, the making of a king, while preserving the opportunity to tell more story in a subsequent film.”

The film deliberately leaves the door open to explore the second, more controversial half of Jackson’s life in a proposed sequel, ending with that now-famous tagline. If the sequel comes to fruition, it would likely shoot next year and release in 2027.

The Buzz Take

Michael is a visual and musical event built for the big screen. Jaafar Jackson’s performance alone is worth the trip to the cinema, and QFX’s immersive sound and screen quality does full justice to the film’s spectacular concert recreations. If you’re a Michael Jackson fan, or simply a fan of great live performances captured on film, this is not one to miss.
