Dashain and Family Reunions

Dashain, the most significant festival in Nepal, is much more than a celebration of cultural and religious traditions. It’s a time that brings families together, symbolizing the essence of unity and togetherness. Rooted in the victory of good over evil, Dashain is a festival that spans 15 days, and during this time, Nepali households are filled with joy, rituals, and most importantly reunions.
For many, Dashain is synonymous with homecoming. As the festival approaches, people from all corners of the world make their way back to their family homes. Cities, towns, and villages witness the return of those who have been away for work, study, or other commitments. This homecoming tradition holds a deep emotional significance, as families who have been separated for months or even years come together, rekindling bonds and creating lasting memories.

The festival begins with Ghatasthapana, and as the days progress, the anticipation of Tika day, when elders bless the younger members of the family, builds up. On the day of Tika, families gather around, offering blessings of prosperity and happiness. Elders place Tika, a mixture of red vermilion and rice on the foreheads of the younger ones, along with Jamara, the sacred grass. This act signifies the transfer of blessings, love, and protection from one generation to the next.
In many Nepali households, Dashain is also a time to indulge in traditional delicacies that are cooked and enjoyed collectively. From the mouth-watering sel roti to savory mutton curry, the kitchen becomes a hub of activity as family members prepare meals together, exchanging stories and laughter. It’s this shared experience of cooking, eating, and spending quality time together that strengthens familial bonds.

Beyond the religious and cultural practices, Dashain is a reminder of the importance of relationships. In today’s fast-paced world, where people often get caught up in the demands of daily life, Dashain offers a time to pause and reconnect with loved ones. It’s a time to set aside differences, forgive, and embrace the spirit of togetherness.
Ultimately, Dashain serves as a beautiful reminder that no matter where life takes you, the warmth of family and the essence of togetherness remain at the heart of the celebration.
