February Art Spotlight: Sangee Shrestha
For more than three decades, Sangee Shrestha has quietly but powerfully shaped Nepal’s contemporary art landscape. A visual artist whose language speaks through color, texture, and form, her work carries emotional depth while engaging with social, political, and personal narratives. While painting lies at the core of her practice, Shrestha is equally drawn to ceramics, where clay becomes a space for understanding, transformation, and introspection.
From an early age, art was never just a pastime. It was her natural language. Simple materials in her hands evolved into layered expressions rich with cultural memory and historical resonance. Over the years, her artistic journey has been guided by discipline, curiosity, and fearless experimentation. With participation in over 300 workshops and exhibitions in Nepal and abroad, her perspective has continually expanded, enriching both her technique and conceptual approach. Beyond creating, she also writes about art and artists, believing that dialogue and documentation play an essential role in uplifting Nepal’s creative ecosystem.

In today’s digital age, Instagram has become an integral extension of Shrestha’s artistic world. Rather than using it as a polished showcase alone, she shares her process; experiments, fragments, and discoveries that shape each work. This openness allows her to connect with audiences across borders, creating a living dialogue that goes far beyond traditional gallery spaces.
She believes these interactions deepen her understanding of how art resonates across cultures and encourage consistency and reflection in her practice. For emerging artists, her advice is simple yet powerful: authenticity matters more than perfection. A sincere voice, shared bravely, will always find its audience.

Even with decades of experience, Shrestha acknowledges that creative blocks are inevitable. She describes moments of stagnation as internal earthquakes, unsettling but necessary. When ideas feel stuck, she chooses to pause rather than force progress.
Nature, music, study, and quiet observation become tools for reconnection. These reflective breaks offer clarity and renewed energy, allowing her to return to her work with intention. For Shrestha, art remains a grounding force, a way to understand herself, process emotion, and connect meaningfully with others.

Developing a personal style, she believes, begins with observation. Nature, daily life, objects, and fleeting details all hold creative potential. Experimentation without fear is essential, new materials and techniques often reveal unexpected truths.
Consistency, patience, and honest self-criticism allow an artist’s voice to evolve naturally. Above all, sincerity gives depth to creative expression and makes it truly distinctive.

Women appear frequently in Shrestha’s work, portrayed with strength, intimacy, and vulnerability. Through these forms, she hopes to remind young women to trust their instincts and recognize their inner resilience. Her art reflects a powerful truth: courage and vulnerability can coexist, and expressing oneself authentically is an act of strength.
