Mha Puja- Celebrating Self-Love and Inner Spirit

Article by- Newjewel Shrestha
In the Newari culture, Mha Puja is a beautiful tradition meaning “worship of the self.” Celebrated on the fourth day of the Tihar festival, this unique ritual represents the significance of recognizing and honoring one’s inner spirit. While Tihar celebrates lights, colors, and family togetherness, Mha Puja brings attention to self-love, self-respect, and the essence of personal well-being. The ceremony also marks the start of Nepal Sambat, the New Year in the Newar calendar, signifying new beginnings, fresh aspirations, and a renewed sense of self-worth.

Mha Puja is deeply symbolic and emphasizes the belief that within each person lies a divine light. The ritual involves cleaning and decorating the house, creating colorful mandalas, and preparing special offerings. Mandalas, drawn on the floor, represent the universe and a person’s journey within it. Each family member sits before their mandala, surrounded by offerings, as they perform puja to honor their body, mind, and spirit. The blessings signify prosperity, health, and personal growth for the year ahead.

What makes Mha Puja unique is its intimate message of self-care. It reminds us to appreciate ourselves and to recognize the value we bring to our own lives and the lives of others. In modern times, Mha Puja serves as a timeless lesson on self-love, encouraging reflection on personal strengths, challenges, and dreams. Through this ritual, the Newar community teaches the world the importance of acknowledging and nurturing oneself—a celebration of the self that strengthens one’s spirit for the coming year.
In a world that often rushes, Mha Puja offers a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate the individual’s journey, making it an inspiring reminder of self-respect, resilience, and renewal.
