“Pravidhi: A New Realm” – an exhibition by Ashim Shakya is being held at Gallery 108 from March 1 to March 31. The exhibitions are a collection of his digital paintings and hand paintings. The central theme of the paintings is the negligence of cultural heritages as we go along the way of modernization and digitization. 

The artworks displayed in “Pravidhi” are characterized by their recurrent reminder of cultural erosion. These pieces reflect Shakya’s deep connection to Kathmandu, drawing inspiration from its rich heritage and the challenges posed by modern urbanization. Each painting speaks to the tension between these two worlds which shows how as we progress in the modern era, our cultural heritages become a burden to us and we lose their value.  

The centerpiece of the exhibition is Shakya’s striking 3D piece, “Mahakal.” This artwork imagines Lord Shiva in human form, beautifully rendered with meticulous detail. The piece is a visual manifestation of spirituality, power, and transformation. The broken wooden logs scattered across the floor symbolize the destruction of cultural identity and values as we march forward into an increasingly digital and modernized world. This piece, alongside others like “The Trudge,” “Singularity,” and “Contemplation,” invites viewers to reflect on the consequences of cultural neglect.

Shakya’s work also touches on themes of inner peace and the psychological void that can arise in modern society. Works like “The Void”, “Inner Resonance”, and “Singularity” delve into the mental and emotional landscapes one might navigate through meditation or introspection. These paintings reflect the peace of mind that can be attained through stillness, but also highlight the emptiness that often exists in the absence of deeper connection and contemplation. Through these pieces, Shakya explores how both silence and void can be deeply profound and revealing aspects of the human condition.
