The Expert-Approved Way to Protect Your Skin This Holi

Holi is a festival of colors, joy, and celebration but while we love the vibrant hues, our skin and hair often need extra care. As skincare expert Muskan Goyal says, “Protection should always come first, makeup comes second.” The key to looking fresh and glowing during Holi is creating a protective base before adding any makeup.

1. Deep Moisturizing is a Must
Apply a generous layer of moisturizer or facial oil before heading out. Well-hydrated skin creates a barrier, making it harder for colors to stick and easier to remove later. As Muskan explains, “Hydrated skin doesn’t absorb color as easily, which makes post-Holi cleanup much gentler.”

2. Never Skip Sunscreen
Holi celebrations usually take place outdoors. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin from sun damage. Reapply if needed, especially if you’re outside for long periods.

3. Oil Your Hair & Body
Apply coconut or almond oil to your hair, scalp, and even lightly to exposed areas like your arms and legs. This helps prevent colors from penetrating deeply and reduces dryness. “Oiling creates a protective layer that keeps both skin and hair from getting excessively dry,” Muskan adds.

Holi isn’t the day for heavy glam. Keep your makeup minimal and practical.

  • Use a lightweight, waterproof BB cream instead of heavy foundation.
  • Choose waterproof mascara and kajal to avoid smudging.
  • Apply a tinted lip balm for hydration and a soft hint of color.
  • Avoid heavy contouring or false lashes, they won’t last through the splashes.

The goal is fresh, breathable, and protected skin, so you can enjoy the celebration while keeping your natural glow intact.
