Argentina Await Messi Injury Update Ahead of World Cup Campaign, May 2026
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has attempted to calm fears surrounding Lionel Messi after the captain suffered a hamstring issue less than three weeks before the start of the2026 FIFA World Cup.
Messi was forced off during Inter Miami CF’s thrilling 6-4 win over Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer on Sunday after appearing to feel discomfort in his left leg. The club later confirmed that the 38-year-old was dealing withmuscle fatigueand overload in his left hamstring.
Despite the injury scare, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni remains optimistic that the situation is not serious enough to jeopardise Messi’s participation in the tournament.
“Obviously, we would have preferred that nothing had happened,” Scaloni told Argentine broadcaster DSports. “Now we have to wait and see how it evolves and what the new tests reveal.”
The Argentina manager added that the initial medical assessment had brought some relief, saying the early signs were “not that bad.”
Inter Miami have not provided a timeline for Messi’s recovery, stating only that his return will depend on his “clinical and functional progress.”
The timing of the injury has naturally caused anxiety among Argentine supporters, with the reigning world champions preparing to defend thetitlethey won at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Lionel Messi, who scored seven goals during thatvictoriouscampaign, is expected to play in what could be his sixth and final World Cup appearance.
Argentina begin their 2026 World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City before facing Austria and Jordan in Group J.
Although concerns remain over his fitness, Messi has been in excellent form for Inter Miami this season, continuing to play a central role for both club and country heading into football’s biggest tournament.
